The name “The Big Apple” was coined by touring jazz musicians of the 1930s who used the slang expression “apple” for any town or city. To play New York City was to play the “big time”- hence the name “Big Apple.”
“Uncle Sam” was originally from New York. During the War of 1812, a meatpacker from Troy, New York, named Sam Wilson stamped “U.S. Beef” on his products. Soldiers interpreted that stamp as “Uncle Sam” and his caricature later came to personify the United States.
Do you know why New York City cabs are yellow? John Hertz, who founded the Yellow Cab Company in 1907, chose yellow because a study conducted by the University of Chicago found that yellow is the easiest color to spot. To this day, New York’s yellow cabs are famous around the world.
